Physical or Social Distancing has had great impact on our society and the future of business, especially training. As an eLearning company, eCubed is dedicated to advancing digital learning and facilitate training. So let’s breakdown the problem at hand.

What is social distancing?

While it may be disappointing to hear that so many sports events, cruises, festivals, and other gatherings are being canceled, there is a public health reason for these measures. Limiting large gatherings helps stop or slow down the spread of disease allowing the health care system to more readily care for patients over time. And that goes for the office as well! As reported by the CDC, staying at least six feet away from one another lessens your chances of catching COVID-19. Large buildings 40 story buildings, for example, house thousands of people who come from all over the region. With only a certain number of elevators and walkways, social distancing is the deliberate attempt to increase the physical space between people to avoid spreading illness. Canceling events and spaces that are likely to draw crowds is the most necessary effort in social distancing.

Examples of social distancing that allow you to avoid larger crowds or crowded spaces are:

  • Working from home instead of at the office
  • Closing schools or switching to online classes
  • Visiting loved ones by electronic devices instead of in-person
  • Canceling or postponing conferences and large meetings

In order to work from home, you require the ability to collaborate and communicate with others, while also having access to in-office resources. Below are some tips and tools on how to best manage your team from a distance and adjust to the new normal.

Collaboration

Some employees will be working from home for the first time, which means figuring out how to stay on task in a new environment that may not lend itself to productivity. But there are ways to deliver results and avoid going stir- crazy, from setting up a good workspace to the way you talk to your team.

Teleworking

The coronavirus is prompting a wide range of employers to ask employees to telecommute, but many are not experienced in working remotely. There are an abundance of online tools that can facilitate teleworking and provide managers with a sense of relief knowing they are on task.

Trello, for example, is a web-based Kanban-style list-making application. At its core, an online corkboard! Companies use it to organize “cards” into lists—those cards can be tasks, notes, projects, shared files, or anything else that helps your team work together.

Team Communication

When it comes to conducting business at a distance, it’s important to create centralized communication. Shift focus from what you can’t do to what you can do. Instill a healthy mental practice of training your brain to immediately think of the possibilities as opposed to worst-case scenarios. Panicked thoughts like, “I don’t know how we’re going to be able to stay in business” won’t create the type of strategic and creative thinking that is needed right now.

Business communication platforms, like Slack, help teams stay in touch on a daily basis. Essentially a chat room for your whole company, designed to replace email as your primary method of communication and sharing. Its workspaces allow you to organize communications by channels for group discussions and allows for private messages to share information, files, and more all in one place.
